Type Locality and Naming
Nilawahan Gr – second formation. Holotype section: Makrach Gorge near Dandot village, Eastern Salt Range. Author: Noetling, 1901. Reference section: None.
Lithology and Thickness
Sandy claystone. In Eastern Salt Range, the formation mainly consists of dark greenish-grey splintery shale and siltstone with intercalated sandstone; in Central Salt Range it contains greenish-grey to black, carbonaceous shale with sand flasers alternate with cross-bedded sandstone.
Thickness: 45-50 m. At the type section, it is 50 m thick and decreases toward the Central Salt Range.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Conformably underlain by Tobra Fm (gradational).
Upper contact
Conformable overlain by Warcha Sandstone Fm (sharp).
Regional extent
The formation is well exposed in the Eastern Salt Range and thins out westwards. It is not developed in the Western Salt Range.

Fossils
The formation is highly fossiliferous, particularly in the basal part in the type section. Conularia fossils are most abundant. A rich fauna of brachiopods (Discina, Martiniopsis, and Chonetes), bivalves (Eurydesma), gastropods, pteropods (Conularia) etc are present.

Depositional setting
Marine in Eastern Salt Range becoming shallower towards the west; it reflects a tidal-flat facies in Central Salt Range.

EMW: Cap rock for Tobra hydrocarbon reservoir.
